Finding What’s Right For You

Help4Addiction can aid your recovery, no matter your decision in care.

Those that suffer from drink or drug addictions struggle when it comes to finding the ideal inpatient services or outpatient care to suit them. Not all rehab centres use the same treatment methods and, to give you the best chance at success, you will best recovery by choosing one that meets the majority of your expectations. Whether those be inpatient, or outpatient expectations will depend entirely upon you.

What’s the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab Clinics?

The biggest question that we should get out the way first, is what the difference is when it comes to inpatient vs outpatient. It is a lot simpler than it sounds.

What is Inpatient?

Inpatient treatment is any rehab program that involves you staying in the clinic full time. Inpatient treatment can also be things like staying overnight in a hospital, going to a detox clinic for drug detox, or taking part in clinic trials or studies.

What is Outpatient?

Outpatient treatment is any rehab help you get where you can go home at the end of the day. If you are using a home detox kit for alcohol addiction, if you are getting online therapy, or if you are seeing a group once a week, these are all considered to be outpatient treatment.

Rehab Treatment Types Explained

You can be seen as a private inpatient or outpatient, and you can be seen as either type on the NHS, too. Inpatient mental health services also come under the same umbrella treatment plans, since recovery from drugs and alcohol, and recovery from a mental health disorder, are similar in treatment techniques. Inpatient treatment for borderline personality disorders in the UK are just as common as inpatient alcohol rehabilitation.

There are some things that need to be done in a medically supervised environment. This is the same reason why we don’t offer drug detox at home as an outpatient. You need to seek inpatient care for drug detox because of the dangers involved in coming off the. Certain types of drug, such as heroin for example, can cause heart problems from withdrawal symptoms. Be extremely wary if you are offered outpatient drug detox and seek a second opinion. These things should only be done in a controlled environment as an inpatient and should not be done at home.

Stages of Recovery and Treatment Types

Recovery written on the road

Once you move past that initial detox phrase, the addiction and/or mental health treatment type that suits you best will depend on your lifestyle.

While inpatient rehabilitation is one of the most successful types of rehab, it doesn’t fit in with every lifestyle. If you are able to, a 7, 14, or 28 day inpatient, full-time residential rehab program will give you the best chance of success. However, if you suffer from an addiction but still work full time, then outpatient treatments might be better for you. It is a similar story with those who are the sole guardian to children, or who have commitments that otherwise stop them from attending full time rehab clinics.

If you do choose outpatient services over inpatient services for your drug or alcohol problem, you should be aware of the downsides. For example, outpatient treatment will be spread out over a longer term. Consider inpatient treatment as a full time course where you live on site, and outpatient services as part-time courses, which take longer to complete.

Costs of Inpatient Vs Outpatient Funding

Last but not least, there is a difference in the price points depending on what your choice is. Outpatient services, although originally seemingly cheaper, stretch on for at least 3 times the length of a full time course. If you think about travel costs and time spent, then inpatient care is better value for money, even although it doesn’t seem like it when you put the money down. Not all outpatient services can be performed from the comfort of your own home… and the longer your recovery goes on for, the more it will cost. To throw an additional spanner into the recovery from addiction funding debate, you can also get private residential inpatient treatment.

Doctor’s View

I have a wide spread of addictive behaviours. Yet I have never had inpatient or outpatient treatment.

None of my addictive behaviour required detox. And I didn’t want to take time away from work (another of my addictions).

Many addicts can get well without treatment of any kind other than the Twelve Step programme.

But some may not believe they have a problem. Because they are still functional. And they don’t want to give up the pleasure they get from using mood-altering substances and processes.

So they wait until they’re in trouble at home or at work or with the law. Even then they may go round the block a few times.

Choosing an inpatient or outpatient treatment depends on how many blocks they go round. And also on which addictive outlets they have used.

Crack cocaine addiction needs inpatient treatment; caffeine addiction doesn’t.

Other complicating factors are co-existing medical or psychiatric conditions and social issues.

The outcome will be similar if the chosen treatment matches the patient’s need.

The relapse rate (usually 35%) is often determined by the patients’ continuing belief they can manage – maybe just a bit longer – without treatment of any kind.
