How Can Help4Addiction Help Treat GHB Addiction?

7 Day RehabAs a starting point for recovery, this will involve counselling, therapy sessions, medically supervised detox programmes and wellness activities. This introductory level can be sufficient for some people to overcome dependency, whilst others may choose to extend their stay. This can take place online, in a rehab clinic (inpatient) or whilst visiting a clinic each day (outpatient).

14 Day Rehab For more comprehensive treatment, a 14-day programme may be necessary to help with GHB addiction. Treatment includes counselling, CBT, group therapy and activities designed to help you break free from dependency.

28 Day Rehab – A one-month stay provides extended support with all the different treatments mentioned, with options to stay for 28 days in the rehab clinic (inpatient) or to stay at home and visit each day (outpatient).

90 Day GHB Rehab – A 90-day or three-month stay offers a longer period to recover and may include a combination of inpatient and outpatient care. The extended period gives you more time to build coping strategies and reduce the risk of relapse.

GHB Detox – Online or InpatientOnline rehab is now available to help monitor your withdrawal under the supervision of professionals. You get access to 24/7 phone support and can receive therapy through one-to-one calls and virtual group therapy.

Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab – You have the option of staying in the clinic overnight (inpatient) or visiting the clinic each day (outpatient). Outpatient treatment can be more affordable as you’re not paying for accommodation, and some people respond well to this approach. Others benefit more from inpatient care, which provides a focused environment to overcome addiction.

Ongoing Support and Aftercare – Also known as secondary treatment, there are a range of follow-on treatments available after rehab to prevent relapse. This may include having a sponsor, a support line, attending therapy groups and being part of a community organisation.

What Is GHB and Why Is It Dangerous?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a powerful depressant that affects the central nervous system. Originally developed as an anaesthetic, it’s now commonly used recreationally for its euphoric and sedative effects.

The danger with GHB is that there’s a very narrow margin between a dose that produces the desired effects and one that can cause unconsciousness, seizures, or even death. Research shows that GHB-related hospital admissions have increased by over 200% in recent years, highlighting the growing risks associated with this substance.

GHB is also highly addictive. Regular use can lead to physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms can be severe and potentially life-threatening without proper medical supervision.

When Should I Seek Help for GHB Addiction?

You should consider reaching out for help if you:

  • Rely on GHB to relax, socialise or cope with stress

  • Experience withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, tremors or insomnia when you stop using

  • Have tried to quit before but found it too difficult to manage alone

  • Find your use is affecting relationships, work or daily responsibilities

  • Are taking higher doses to achieve the same effects

  • Have experienced blackouts, memory loss or GHB-related hospital visits

Even if you’re unsure whether your use counts as an addiction, it’s always better to talk to a professional. Our team can assess your situation confidentially and guide you toward the right treatment and support.

How Do I Know If I or A Loved One Has a GHB Problem?

A GHB problem develops when you become dependent on the substance to function throughout the day, and there are noticeable changes in your behaviour, mood and physical health.

Physical Warning Signs: If you’re using GHB regularly, you may notice physical symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, memory problems, and difficulty with coordination. Over time, GHB use can cause significant damage to your nervous system and overall health.

Psychological Dependence: You may find yourself thinking about GHB constantly, planning your day around when you can use it, or feeling anxious or unable to cope without it. This psychological grip is a clear sign that dependency has developed.

Increased Tolerance: A key indicator of GHB addiction is needing to take more of the substance to achieve the same effects. Your body adapts to regular use, requiring higher doses — which significantly increases the risk of overdose.

Withdrawal Symptoms: If you’ve developed physical dependence, you’ll experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop using or reduce your intake. These can include anxiety, insomnia, tremors, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures or hallucinations. GHB withdrawal can be dangerous and should always be managed under medical supervision.

What Techniques Can Help With GHB Addiction Recovery?

  • One-to-one counselling with addiction specialists
  • Medication to manage withdrawal symptoms
  • Nutritional support to rebuild physical health
